Each is armed with a reaper chain-cleaver, thermal spear and a carapace-mounted heavy stubber, the latter of which can be replaced with a meltagun. 4 unique heads are supplied in the kit, and both weapons (which feature articulation at the shoulder) and legs can be attached to either side of the model, allowing for some customisation of pose.

This kit comes as 116 components, and is supplied with 2 Citadel 100mm Round bases, as well as an Armiger Transfer sheet.

Valiant Imperial Knight is table ready !

Hello everyone !!

I kind of completed my Valiant knight. ( At least he is table ready.)
Going to wait after getting 2 or 3 kits for the markings and transferts but i think i am going to go the Hawkshroud way ^^

I really loved paint this kit. Even if the ending it was more time consuming than i expected ^^
To be honest i could continue at least another week to get all the details as i want them but doing this create the risk of never finishing it ! And it's my specialty ^^

Here a quick rundown of the color i used :

Color Used

Priming
Black Primer (CAN)
White Zenithal (AB)

Metals
Vallejo Gunmetal (AB)
Nuln oil + Lahmian Medium (50/50)
Silver dry brush (boooh i know)

Coopper
Hashut Copper
Sepia ink
Hashut dry brush

Yellow

-With an Airbrush-
Averland Sunset base at least 7 or 8 thin coat.
Highlight 1 Yriel Yellow + a drop of Averland (what was left in the airbrush) 5 to 6 thin coat
Highlight 2 Flash Gitz Yellow + a dropof Yriel (what was left in the airbrush) 5 to 6 thin coat
Shade 1 Sunset + XV77 50/50 Super thin 3 to 5 coats
Shade 2 XV 77 Super thing 3 to 5 coats

-With a Brush-
Dark lining with xv77+Brown (any dark brown it's doesnt really matters)
Lining with Flash gitz yellow

Conclusion

Yellow have a bad reputation but it's easy to paint if you know the 4 cardinals rules of yellow (100% made up name ^^)

These rules were offered to me before starting this Yellow knight.

1) AlwayspPaint yellow over white and grey, keep the black for the deepest shadows.
2) Yellow is THE transparent color, i will not bore you with the details but : Best look is only achieved with multiple coats ! (Lots of coats, lot's of lots of lots of coats ^^)
3) Never highlight with white or shade with black unless pastel is the desired effect. It's always better to do multiple light coat with the brighter yellow you got. With a brush imagine glazing 20 times the same spot, (with an airbrush of course it's done in 2 minutes).
4) Always mix a bit of the previous color in the next highlight or shade when working with yellow. I don't really know why, but 2 GD daemon winners told me the same exact same thing. I know it's easy with an airbrush to just jump to the next color and do a perfect blend, but try to avoid it with yellow as it dull the color.

I roughly followed these advice for my knight and in the end it was easy and decent looking so it can't hurt you ;)

I'll try to do a step by step on yellow next week (just need to find something flat and big to spray on^^)

At 80% on the Knight Valiant !

-Still some air brushing to do on the upper central carapace. (correction of the tone and brightness)
-2 turrets and 2 missiles to finish
-Copper parts
-Some lining on the feet
-skulls
-few extra pieces to complete and glue.
&
the base :)

4 to 6 hours i think.

This model is such a pleasure to paint it's going to be hard to not paint another Dominus after this one !

Can't wait to field it ^^

Canis rex/preceptor kit will be later this year (whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat !) but in a super strong kit !


The valiant Freeblade Sir Hekhtur, and his Knight Preceptor steed Canis Rex, will be available later in the year as part of a dual kit that also builds the Knight Preceptor (not to mention every other variant of Questoris-class Knight).

heh, i had the feeling that Hekhtur wasn't ready !

Knight Valiant Kit review.

Hello again everyone !!

Earlier this week we received a Knight Valiant by gw (lucky us !). After playing with the kit for the last 4 or 5 days, i wanted to do a little post of my impressions with the biggest plastic knight released yet !

I


The Valiant and The Castellan are 2 separate kits. I know the dual was desired by everyone but with sprues this big the price would be quite high.

II


Valiant have 2 sprue Labelled A and one Sprue Labelled B.

It's really interesting because while the A sprue is copied. The elements are used differently to obtain different legs or weapons positions. It's been true for quite some time but the engineering level of GW sprue continue to amaze me.

III


The Assembly and the instructions were great. Everything fit super well, the most tricky parts are well explained and any average modeler will have no trouble building the Dominus Knight !

My only bad experience was with parts A31. If next week you have problem to fit them too, leave me a message ;) (i want to know if it was me or the kit ^^)

Gaps and Mold lines were a bit tedious to remove especially on power conduits cables, weapons...Also my files were quite old and at 50% of the assembly i went to the FLGS and bough new cutters, files ...Everything ! Then it went a lot smoother ;)
ps : Don't be like bob, take notice of the gap at the top of the legs and be sure to fill and file it before priming !

I used 3 types of glue : Gel, Liquid, Plastic. You are not forced to, but it's easier to glue small parts with plastic glue, big parts in 2 side with liquid glue and parts that stay mobile with gel (weapons, arms...).

Painting, as you can see on the image is not finish but i learned a few valuable lessons :
-Don't glue armor panel before painting, glue them AFTER !
-Get an airbrush !
-Locate the different section that are going to get covered and don't spend too much time on these.
-Get Bigger brush !
-Get an airbrush

Conclusion

This kit is an awesome piece of Hobby fun. Even if you are not into knights or 40k it's a treat to just spray on it.
The amounts of details is very good, all the corner are crisp and perfect. A pleasure !

My plan

I'll do a more detailed painting post in the future but in nutshell i am going to finish applying metal base, then i'll clean every thing, then i'll decide on what part i want to do black, or if i want free hand on a shoulder or stripes, then i'll do the details work !

I know i still have a lot of work on this kit to be finished but i a plan to get a Castellan and Canis rex (for a 3 models army lance)

The review is going to be divided in 3 parts :

Introduction

The book is 120 pages, hard cover.

Arts

In the recent GW codex the illustrations were very good, the Harlequin codex had a lot of interesting one but....
This codex have incredible arts. The style is perfect and you get this sense of towering majesty from most of the knights shown. Even the usually meh armory sketch are this time super good !

Let's have a look at these beauuuuuty !











Fluff

I was never super interested in the imperial knights fluff and Atia was supposed to write this part ^^
But Atia is busy with life and i had to do it :D
After reading it, i am bit ashamed for my prior lack of interest. The fluff is super interesting and was a very good read !

From what Atia explained to me lot of the background is from Alan Blight writing !

Origin

-Knight come from STC used by the settlers in the first wave of space expansion.

-There are 3 patterns for knight in the book : Armiger, Questoris, Dominus. they are the most used one.

-The Throne (piloting computer) had a weird secondary effect of transforming pilot in superstitious real Knight ! hence the first wave of colonized worlds transformed into knight world with kings, courts, baron, serf...

-The Throne haunt you with the past pilots and old memories (sound a lot like IA ^^).

-When the human civilization collapsed du to Psykers, IA, Gene war, Knight worlds were relatively safe. Yea they burned psykers, didn't trusted IA, didn't altered their genes.

-When Horus Heresy happened it was again their mindset of "Knight of the world that was" that saved them. Only a few number of houses turned against the emperor and loyalist purged traitor themselves before joining the good fight ^^

-The sacristan Orders. This is a really interesting part of the story. When the Emperor Crusade re-discovered the knight worlds, they witnessed local artisans repairing knights armors. These artisans were recruited by the Mechanicus and formed. They became the Sacristan Orders of their own world. In a sense they are a bit like Space Marines, they are formed in the closest Forgeword and work for their HouseHold only.

-Knights Preceptor New variant of Questoris, close ranged power house, piloted by the local pilot teacher/drill sergeant. (This is gonna be a dual kit with Canis Rex).

-Nowadays : A Mechanicus vs Necron fight went bad and it's now a full war with mountains of Necron awakening on a lot of forge world !

-There is 9 houses HouseHold in the book with a full pages for each of them.
-Each Knight model get a full fluff page too.

Ok that's all i have to say on the fluff, Atia will pitch in and add more details.

Rules

General rules

-All knights must choose a Questor Allegiance : Mechanicus or Imperium. Doesn't change much but grant access to different Artifacts, stratagems.
-HouseHold : All knights must choose an HouseHold or be a FreeBlade.
-If you choose an Household you get a special abilities (there is 9 options)
-If you go the FreeBlade way you get a Quality and a Burden (1 or 2 depending if you roll or choose.)

Knight Lance

: Super heavy detachment with a twist
-All the knights in a lance must be from the same Household.
-FreeBlade can be added to a Lance without loosing the benefit of it.
-You don't get Command Points if you don't have at least 3 Questoris/Dominus knight. Armiger pattern doesn't generate Command points :(.
*It was confirmed that FW pattern that are big enough are going to qualify for command points.
*One model per Lance is a character.

Warlord Traits


-One warlord
-Can be sir Hecktur but then the Trait is imposed (-1 moral at 12", -2 at 6")
-6 generalist options or 9 Household Specific traits. Nothing crazy but a few good one (4++ vs shooting, RR all 1 to hit, +2 run and charge rolls buff aura)

Relics


22 Heirlooms. There is a bit a of everything : Upgraded weapons,bonus to melee hit roll, repairs.
My 2 favorites are : +1 armor save super suit and the helm grating +1 to hit to nearby Armiger models.

This could be a very cool combo ! The new preceptor class grant reroll to hit for Armiger and this one grant +1 to hit. The Armiger Autocanon is 2d3 s7 ap-1 Damage 3. each on have 2 Autocanons ^^ So 4d3 attacks that hit on 2+ RR1 with 60" range per Armiger. Moarr dakka !

Stratagem


28 stratagems, some are super duper good (Full tilt ! ) other are okish. HouseHold an Questor Allegiance affect the list of stratagems you can choose from.

stats

-Preceptor knight is a new guy models and use the new Laz weapon from Hekthur (it's the generic Hekthur)
-Canis Rex is the only 2+ 2+ in the codex.
-Only one way to reach 2+ 2+ is by going the freeblade way and roll a 6 at the start of the game.
-The Gallant was improved a lot, reduced base price and 2+ ws, +1A






Conclusion

Let me say it right now, the codex is weak ^^ . Not in an absolute power way, as you still field Frigging Imperial Knights ! But in the Synergy way. Off course there are cute combo. Most involve the Scout class knights or the Gallant. You can still try the freeblade Castellan and hope for a 6 (for 2+ BS castellan). But all in all the synergies are quite mild and it's totally normal. The knights are so powerful that a single synergy is nearly game breaking.

For exemple : I am pretty sure that the Gallant bombs with a 16+3d6 threat range are going to be scary.
Only regret with the codex is that sacristan are missing from the rules section :(

My conclusion is : "Fuck this i am starting a knight army right now ! " (see my next post )
